Brief
Design and create a luminaire for a commercial situation. The brief could be interpreted in any way but needed to be acceptable for a high-end commercial setting and so the installation and location need to be considered.
Investigation
Again, with any project brief, research and investigation must be conducted first to ensure you are designing something that people want, and something that will go well with the intended environment.

primary research

As a result of the investigation, I gathered that natural and organic forms seemed to be trend for inspiration as well as round geometric forms, working with symmetry and asymmetry.
Decision Making
Probably the hardest moments are where you must choose and focus on one thing to take forwards and further develop.
I wanted to focus on wood as a main material for my luminaire as well as a modern type design, since I wanted to make something different to the things that were already out there and a lot of luminaires already existing in investigated environments were made of metal and very traditional. Switching it up in this way I hoped would pay off with the final product. I didn’t stray too far from I saw that worked, and so I focused on round forms, with seamless integration of parts.

Final Design
I chose to combine and develop my initial ideas into one design, going with a dark wood as a main material to use along with going for sleek round forms. Incorporating traditional wood working techniques I believe with add an extra uniqueness to the product.
Isn’t it nice when people can appreciate handmade products?
Concentrating on good integration of the bulb and frame was very important to me. There are so many products out there where the bulb and the rest of the piece are separate and don’t always seem like they belong together. I want my bulb and piece to work well together while still enabling the bulb to stand out on its own and be purposeful.
